01

Who is responsible

José P. Miguel, an individual, in Portugal. Contact: portalsscript@gmail.com.

There is no company behind this: it is a personal project, and the app is free.

This policy covers the whole of PØRTAL S.: the site portalsscript.com, the computer app, the one installed on a phone from the browser, and the accounts server.

02

Without an account, your scripts stay with you

If you use PØRTAL S. without creating an account, your scripts are kept in your own browser. They never reach a server, and nobody — me included — can read them.

It also means that clearing your browser data or moving to another computer loses them. Export anything you actually want to keep.

Without an account there is no sharing and there are no notes either: a script that exists only in your browser cannot reach anyone else.

03

With an account

If you create an account, the server keeps:

  • the username you choose, and your password — hashed, never in plain text;
  • your scripts, each with its Board, its photos, its cover photo and a small summary for its card on the home screen (pages, title and author);
  • which of your scripts are in the bin, and since when;
  • your notes — as many as you write, with their formatting, in a folder per script or in Notes, and the ones you deleted in the last 30 days. Only you read them, and the same goes for the cards they pin to your Board;
  • your own Goblin page for each shared script;
  • how you set up the screen (colours and what it shows);
  • if you write with other people, what is described under “Shared scripts”.

A photo is shrunk and saved again on your device before it goes anywhere: the original file — and what it carries hidden in it, such as where it was taken — is not kept.

Purpose: so your scripts are there on another device, and so you can write with the people you invite. Legal basis: performance of our contract — GDPR Article 6(1)(b).

They sit on a server in Paris, France, inside the European Union. They are not transferred outside the EU.

The server also keeps a technical log of the requests it receives (IP address, time, what was asked for) for 5 days, to catch faults and abuse. An invite link's secret never reaches that log. Legal basis: a legitimate interest in keeping the service working and safe — GDPR Article 6(1)(f).

As the server's administrator I can technically see everything stored on it: your username, your scripts, boards and photos, both Goblin pages — the shared one and your own — your notes, and who is on which script. “Private”, in this app, means private from other users, not from whoever runs the server. I do not read any of it: I only go there when it is strictly necessary to keep the service working — for example, to look at the titles of an account's scripts to tell whether it belongs to whoever says it does, when someone has lost their password — or when the law requires it.

04

Shared scripts

You can invite up to three people to write a script with you, with an invite link. Each link works once, for whoever opens it first and accepts — so send it only to the person it is meant for, and cancel it if it goes unused. Whoever opens the link sees your username and the script's title before deciding.

Everyone on a script sees and can change everything that belongs to it: the pages, the title page, the cards, the Board and its photos, the script's cover photo, the cast notes, scene numbers and (CONT'D), and the shared Goblin page — including whatever was there before they joined. They also see the username of each person on the script, since when they have been on it, and when they are writing and on which line. A username is also the name you sign in with, so choose a password nobody could guess — the server slows down anyone who tries many.

They see nothing else of yours: not your other scripts — not their titles, not even that they exist — not your own Goblin page, not your notes on that script or any other, nor the cards they pin to your Board, not your colours or settings, not how many photos you have, not your password, not the list of accounts. That holds in the app and for requests made to the server directly: the rules that enforce it live on the server, not only on the screen.

Only the person who started a script can invite, remove people and delete it. Someone removed stops seeing it from that moment, but whatever they already had open on screen they can keep as a script of their own — there is no technical way to take back what is already on someone's device. Someone who leaves stops seeing it; their own Goblin page for it is deleted, and their notes on it go to Recently Deleted. Someone removed keeps their own Goblin page, still visible only to them, until they choose what happens to what is on their screen: it goes into the copy they keep, or is deleted if they let it go.

Each photo counts against the allowance of whoever added it. Anyone on the script can delete any photo on it.

Sharing only ever happens because you ask for it, and joining only because the invited person accepts. Legal basis: performance of our contract — GDPR Article 6(1)(b).

05

Cookies, and what stays on your device

This site sets no cookies. Not one.

What it does use is your browser's storage — local storage, the browser's own database (IndexedDB) and the app's cache — only so the app can work. That is strictly necessary, so it does not require consent. Which is also why you will not find a banner here asking for it. The computer app keeps the same, in its own folder on your computer.

What is kept there:

  • the session of whoever is signed in;
  • the screen's settings (theme, zoom, spellcheck, and little else) and, with an account, the customisation you make;
  • scripts written without an account and, with an account, whatever has not yet reached the server, until it does;
  • without an account, the bin, where a deleted script waits 48 hours before it really goes. With one, the bin is kept with your scripts on the server, and only what you threw away or put back without a connection waits here until it gets there;
  • the words you told the spellchecker to accept;
  • how far you have got in the tutorial;
  • where you were looking at each script's Board from;
  • the Boards' photos and the scripts' cover photos;
  • with an account, which scripts written in this browser you have already brought into it;
  • with an account, a copy of the scripts you have opened on this device and of your notes, so you can open and read them without a connection.

When you sign out, that copy of the scripts and notes is erased, and so is the bin kept here. Whatever has not yet reached the server stays, under that account only, until you sign in again.

And two things that belong to the site itself: the copy of the app your browser keeps so it can open without internet and — only while the tab is open — an invite you opened by link, until you decide whether to accept it.

Your language is not kept: the site always opens in English, and your choice lasts only until you reload or close the page.

06

What leaves your device

Opening the site means asking portalsscript.com for its pages, as with any site. The fonts, the spellchecker's dictionaries, the PDF reader and everything else come from this site itself rather than an external CDN — no third party learns your IP address simply because you opened this page.

With an account, what you write goes to the accounts server, as described under “With an account”.

A file you import — Fountain, Final Draft or PDF — is read on your device and sent nowhere, neither to this site nor to anyone else: what is kept is the script that comes out of it, stored like any other.

Writing by voice — the microphone in the script’s bar — uses your browser’s own speech recognition: while the microphone is on, the browser may send the sound to its maker to be written down (Google in Chrome, Microsoft in Edge, Apple in Safari), and their privacy rules apply. It listens only while the button is lit, and what comes back is text, which goes into the script as if you had typed it. It does not exist in the computer app or in Firefox.

The computer app, each time it opens, asks portalsscript.com whether the site has changed, and downloads only what has. That request carries none of your scripts and nothing of your account.

The computer app is downloaded from GitHub, where its installers are kept: when you press download, the request goes to GitHub (owned by Microsoft), and its privacy rules apply.

If you write to me — to report a bug, ask for a new password, delete your account or anything else — the email reaches portalsscript@gmail.com, a Gmail inbox, run by Google, and I keep your address and what you wrote so I can answer. Legal basis: your request, and my legitimate interest in answering it — GDPR Article 6(1)(b) and (f).

“Report a bug” opens your email program with the message already started: the name of the script (never its text), how many pages, scenes and words it has, whether it is stored in the account or the browser, and which browser and window size you are using — in the computer app, its version and the system. “I’ve forgotten my password” opens an email with room for your username. None of it goes anywhere until you send it.

A link you put on the Board opens only when you click it, and the site at the other end is not told where you came from.

07

Analytics

There are none. Not anywhere — not here, not on josepmiguel.com, not in the computer app. I count no visits, I measure nothing, and I use no analytics service.

There was one for a while: a cookieless visit counter. It is gone, and it is gone completely.

08

What never happens

No data is sold or handed to anyone. A script only reaches another person if you invite them. There are no ad networks, no social media pixels, no cross-site tracking.

09

How long

Scripts stay until you delete them.

A script in the bin goes for good 48 hours after you threw it away — the first time the app is open on any of your devices after that. Until then you can put it back on any of them.

A note stays until you delete it. Deleted, it waits 30 days in Recently Deleted, where you can recover it, and goes from the server for good the first time the app is open on any of your devices after that; Delete for good does not wait. The notes on a script you delete for good, leave, or let go once it is gone go to Recently Deleted at that moment, with the same 30 days. While a script waits in the bin, its notes wait with it. If you are taken off a script and keep your copy, the notes stay on the server, yours alone, tied to the original script, and come back if you are invited again.

A shared script belongs to whoever started it: if they delete it, or their account is deleted, it goes for everyone on it, photos included.

There are backup copies of the server, so it can be put back if something goes wrong. Something deleted can survive in one of those copies until that copy is itself deleted.

10

Deleting your account

A script, a note or a photo you delete yourself, in the app. The whole account I delete, by hand: write to portalsscript@gmail.com.

With the account go the scripts you started — and with them their photos, the seats of the people writing them with you, and their invites — your notes, your Goblin pages and your screen customisation. The people writing those scripts with you stop seeing them, and can keep what is on their screen as a script of their own.

You leave other people's scripts. What you wrote in them, and the photos you put there, stay in those scripts, because they became part of them.

11

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, take it with you, restrict its processing, and object to it. Write to portalsscript@gmail.com: I answer without delay, and within a month at most, as the GDPR requires.

Portability is already built in: export to PDF, Fountain or Final Draft whenever you like, without asking anyone.

If you believe your data has been mishandled, you can complain to the CNPD — the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados, the Portuguese data protection authority, at cnpd.pt.

12

Minors

This is not a service aimed at children. In Portugal, the law lets a person agree on their own to an online service handling their data from the age of 13. Here I ask for more: if you are under 16, only create an account with the permission of whoever is responsible for you.

13

Changes

If this changes, the date at the top changes too. Anything that matters is explained here rather than buried.

01

03

Com conta

Se criares conta, fica guardado no servidor:

  • o nome de utilizador que escolheres e a palavra-passe — cifrada, nunca em texto simples;
  • os teus guiões, cada um com o seu Quadro, as fotos dele, a foto de capa e um pequeno resumo para o cartão do ecrã inicial (páginas, título e autor);
  • que guiões tens no lixo, e desde quando;
  • as tuas notas — quantas escreveres, com a formatação delas, numa pasta por guião ou na pasta Notas, e as que apagaste nos últimos 30 dias. Só tu as lês, e o mesmo vale para os cartões que elas prendem ao teu Quadro;
  • a tua página do Goblin de cada guião partilhado;
  • a personalização do ecrã (cores e o que mostra);

Base legal: execução do contrato contigo — artigo 6.º, n.º 1, alínea b) do RGPD.

Base legal: execução do contrato — artigo 6.º, n.º 1, alínea b) do RGPD.

05

Cookies, e o que fica no teu aparelho

O site não usa cookies. Nenhum.

  • a sessão de quem entrou na conta;
  • as definições do ecrã (tema, zoom, corretor, e pouco mais) e, com conta, a personalização que fizeres;
  • os guiões escritos sem conta e, com conta, o que ainda não chegou ao servidor, até lá chegar;
  • sem conta, o lixo, onde um guião apagado espera 48 horas antes de ir mesmo. Com conta, o lixo fica com os guiões, no servidor, e aqui só o que deitaste fora ou puseste de volta sem ligação, até lá chegar;
  • as palavras que mandaste o corretor aceitar;
  • o ponto em que vais no tutorial;
  • o sítio de onde estavas a olhar para o Quadro de cada guião;
  • as fotos dos Quadros e as fotos de capa dos guiões;
  • com conta, que guiões escritos neste browser já levaste para ela;

06

10

Apagar a conta
